Tell Us What Changed

"Food is softening." The freezer is cold, just not cold enough. Common reasons: a dirty condenser coil, a weak or stopped fan, a gasket letting in warm air or the start of a defrost failure.

"There is a wall of frost." Frost-free freezers clear their coils on a schedule. Heavy frost on the back panel means the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor, or the control has stopped doing its job. On chest and manual-defrost freezers, it simply means it is time to defrost — or that the lid is not sealing.

"It runs and runs." A freezer that never rests is losing the fight against heat: blocked condenser, failing fan, door not sealing, low refrigerant or a sensor reading too warm.

"It is completely warm, but the light works." Power reaches the unit, but the cooling circuit is not running. The start relay, the overload, the control board or the compressor itself is next to check.

"Water is pooling inside or under it." A clogged defrost drain, a cracked drain tube or a drain pan out of position.

"It is making a new noise." Squeals from a fan motor, a scraping sound from a blade touching ice, or a loud clicking from the compressor's start device.

How Switch Gets Your Freezer Back in the Game

1. Start your repair request. Call or use the form. We answer 24/7 and find the earliest time on the route for your ZIP code.

2. We diagnose the freezer. Our technician measures the real temperature, checks how long the compressor runs, inspects the condenser and fans, tests the defrost heater and its thermostat or sensor, checks the start circuit and the compressor, and looks closely at the door or lid seal.

3. You get the answer. We explain what failed and what fixing it involves. You decide.

4. We repair, test and wrap up. Genuine or OEM-approved parts go in, the freezer runs, and we confirm it is pulling down toward 0°F. You are covered by a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor, and up to 12 months on Sub-Zero.

The Freezer Parts We Replace Most

Evaporator fan motor. It moves air across the cold coil and through the cabinet. When the bearings wear out, it squeals first and then stops.

Defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Together they melt frost off the coil several times a day. Either one failing lets frost slowly smother the coil.

Condenser fan motor. It cools the compressor and the condenser coil. A stalled fan makes the whole freezer run hot and long.

Start relay and overload. Small parts that get the compressor going. When they fail, the freezer clicks instead of humming.

Temperature sensor and control board. The sensor reports the temperature; the board decides what runs. A bad reading means the freezer cools too little or too much.

Door gasket. The seal keeps humid air out. A torn or stiff gasket brings frost, ice crystals on food and long run times.

Garage Freezers in Georgia

A lot of Atlanta freezers live in the garage, and the garage is a tough place for an appliance. In summer, temperatures out there can climb well past what a standard freezer is designed for, so the compressor runs almost nonstop and the condenser has a hard time shedding heat. In a winter cold snap, some freezers sense the cold room and barely run at all, which lets the inside warm up.

If your garage freezer struggles at the extremes, we check whether a part has actually failed or whether the unit simply is not rated for those conditions. Garage-ready models and good ventilation make a big difference, and we will tell you honestly which situation you are in.

Simple Checks Before We Arrive

  • Confirm the freezer is plugged in and the breaker or GFCI outlet has not tripped.
  • Make sure the temperature control was not bumped to a warmer setting.
  • Look at the door or lid: is anything stopping it from closing all the way?
  • Check that the vents inside are not blocked by packages.
  • On a chest freezer, check the frost layer; if it is thicker than about a quarter inch, it needs defrosting.

Please do not scrape thick frost with a knife or a screwdriver. Puncturing the coil turns a simple fix into a sealed-system repair.

Protect the Food While You Wait

Keep the door closed as much as you can. A full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 hours (USDA). Pack items tightly together, add bags of ice if you have them, and move the most valuable food to a cooler or a neighbor's freezer if the wait will be long. Food that still has ice crystals or sits at 40°F or below can be refrozen.

Repair or Replace?

Most freezer repairs involve fans, defrost parts, relays, sensors, gaskets and control boards — all replaceable without touching the sealed system. Those repairs make sense.

Replacement may be the sharper choice when a small, older freezer has a failed compressor, or when a chest freezer has a leak in the coil built into its walls. For built-in freezer columns and drawers, repair is nearly always the better value. We give you the facts first.

Keep It Freezing

  • Clean dust off the condenser coil every six months or so.
  • Keep some open space around the cabinet for airflow.
  • A fuller freezer holds temperature better when the door opens.
  • Check the gasket for tears and clean it with warm, soapy water.
  • Keep the freezer level so the door swings closed by itself.

Freezer Repair FAQ

Why is my freezer running but not freezing?

The most common causes are a frosted evaporator coil from a failed defrost part, a stopped fan, a dirty condenser or a bad door seal.

What temperature should my freezer hold?

0°F, according to the USDA and FDA.

Do you work on chest freezers too?

Yes, along with upright, built-in, drawer and compact freezers and the freezer section of refrigerators.

Can I put a regular freezer in my garage?

Many standard freezers struggle in very hot or very cold garages. Check your manual for the temperature range it is designed for.

How long does frozen food stay safe without cooling?

About 48 hours if the freezer is full and the door stays closed, about 24 hours if it is half full (USDA).

Do you fix refrigerant leaks?

Our EPA 608 certified technicians can locate and assess leaks and tell you whether a sealed-system repair is worth it for your freezer.

Is my freezer repair covered by a warranty?

Freezer repairs carry up to 6 months on parts and labor; Sub-Zero repairs carry up to 12 months.
