Oven Cold, Burner Clicking or Temperature Way Off?

"The oven won't heat." On an electric oven, look first at the bake element — a visible break, blister or burn mark gives it away, but some fail without any sign. On a gas oven, the igniter is the leading suspect: it can glow and still be too weak to open the gas valve.

"It heats, but way too hot or too cold." A temperature sensor that has drifted, a control that reads it wrong or a door gasket leaking heat. Cakes that sink and roasts that take an extra hour are the clue.

"Bake is dead but broil works." The bake element or bake burner side has failed; power or gas supply is fine.

"It takes forever to preheat." A weak igniter on gas models, a failing element on electric models or a convection fan that stopped.

"The door is locked after self-clean." The oven may still be cooling. If it stays locked once it is cold, the lock motor, a switch or the control is at fault.

"There is an error code." Codes usually point to a sensor, a lock or a control circuit. A photo of the display saves time.

"It shuts off mid-bake." A cooling fan that quit, an overheating control or a thermal fuse that trips under heat.

"Something smells like gas." Turn the oven off, do not flip any switches and leave the house. Call your gas company or 911 from outside. We repair the oven after the gas company has made it safe.

How Switch Gets Your Oven Back in the Game

Start your repair request. Calls are answered 24/7, or use the form. Tell us the brand, gas or electric, and what changed.

We diagnose the oven. The technician tests elements and burners, measures igniter current on gas ovens, checks the gas valve and safety valve, compares the sensor reading with the real cavity temperature, tests the control board and relays, the thermal fuse and high-limit, the fans, and the door lock and gasket.

You get the answer. We explain what failed and what the repair involves. You decide what happens next.

We repair, test and wrap up. Genuine or OEM-approved parts go in, then we run bake and broil and check the temperature before we leave. Our work carries a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor.

Gas Oven or Electric Oven: How They Fail

Gas ovens light a burner under the floor of the cavity and, on most models, a second burner at the top for broiling. A hot-surface igniter heats up, the safety valve senses the current it draws and lets gas flow. Igniters weaken slowly, so the most common story is an oven that took longer and longer to light and then stopped. Gas valves, flame sensors and burner orifices come next.

Electric ovens heat with a bake element at the bottom, often hidden under the floor panel, and a broil element at the top. Elements usually fail open — no heat at all — or with a short that trips the breaker. Relays on the control board, which switch the high current, are the other common failure.

Both types rely on a temperature sensor, a control, door parts and, on many models, a cooling fan that protects the electronics. Convection models add a rear fan and sometimes a third element.

Built for Homes, Rentals and Small Kitchens

An oven failure lands differently depending on who is waiting for dinner.

Homes and condos. We book a window that fits your day and keep the kitchen tidy while the oven is pulled out or opened up.

Rentals and property managers. Let us know who will meet the technician. You get a plain report of what failed and what was replaced, so the owner and the tenant hear the same thing.

Offices and small businesses. Break-room ovens and residential-style ranges in small shops and studios get the same diagnosis and the same warranty as a home kitchen.

The Parts We Replace Most

  • Hot-surface igniters on gas ovens
  • Bake and broil elements on electric ovens
  • Oven temperature sensors
  • Thermal fuses and high-limit switches
  • Control boards, relays and touch panels
  • Convection fan motors and cooling fan motors
  • Door lock assemblies, hinges and gaskets

Quick Checks Before You Call

  • Check the breaker. An electric oven can lose half of its 240-volt supply and stay cold while the clock still lights up.
  • Confirm the gas valve behind the range is open.
  • Make sure no timer or delay-start setting is active.
  • If the oven was just self-cleaned, let it cool completely before trying the door.
  • Note what still works: broil, bake, convection, the cooktop. It narrows things down.

Repair or Replace?

Most oven failures come down to an igniter, an element, a sensor, a fuse, a fan or a lock. Those are straightforward repairs, and they make sense on nearly any oven. Wall ovens especially are worth fixing, since a new one has to fit the existing cabinet cutout.

Replacement may be the sharper move when an older oven needs a control board that is no longer made, or when the cavity has rusted through. Either way, get the facts first.

Keep Your Oven Cooking Right

  • Wipe spills once the oven cools so they do not bake on.
  • Run self-clean only when you really need it; the extreme heat is hard on locks, fuses and boards.
  • Do not line the oven floor with foil.
  • Avoid leaning on the open door.
  • Check the gasket for tears or flattened spots.

Oven Repair FAQ

Why is my gas oven not heating when the igniter glows?

The igniter is likely weak. It glows but no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve. A new igniter usually solves it.

Why does my electric oven trip the breaker?

A shorted bake or broil element is the most common reason. A damaged wire or terminal can do it too. Leave the breaker off and call us.

My oven temperature is off. Can you fix that?

Yes. We measure the real temperature, test the sensor and the control, and adjust or replace parts. Many ovens also allow a small temperature offset from the control panel.

Can you open an oven door stuck locked after self-clean?

Yes. Let the oven cool fully first. If it stays locked, we diagnose the lock and release it safely.

Do you repair Wolf, Thermador and Viking wall ovens?

Yes, along with everyday wall ovens and range ovens.

Is my oven repair covered by a warranty?

Every oven repair is covered for up to 6 months on parts and labor.
