Burner Won't Light? Start Here

"It clicks, but there is no flame." Likely causes: a burner cap sitting off-center, clogged burner ports, a spill that soaked the burner or a weak spark at the electrode.

"It will not stop clicking." Likely causes: moisture or grease inside a spark switch behind one of the knobs, or a failing spark module. Turn the range off at the breaker or unplug it and let it dry overnight. If the clicking returns, the part needs replacing.

"There is no click at all." Likely causes: a failed spark module, a loose wire or no power reaching the range.

"The flame is yellow, weak or uneven." Likely causes: partly blocked burner ports, a misaligned burner head, or an air-and-gas mix that is off. A healthy gas burner burns mostly blue.

"The burner lights, then goes out." Likely causes: on ranges with flame-failure safety, a thermocouple or flame sensor that no longer detects the flame.

"I smell gas." Turn every knob off and do not light anything or use switches. If the smell stays, leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside. We repair the range once it has been made safe.

Electric, Glass-Top and Induction Problems

"One zone will not heat." On coil and radiant tops: a burned-out element, a failed infinite switch, or a scorched receptacle or terminal. On induction: a coil, a sensor or the power board.

"It only heats on high." The infinite switch that cycles the element on and off has stuck.

"An element will not turn off." A failed switch or relay. Turn the range off at the breaker until it is repaired.

"The glass top is cracked." Stop using it and cut power at the breaker. On many models, the glass can be replaced.

"My induction zone flashes and won't heat." Check the pan with a magnet first. Induction works only with magnetic cookware. If the pan is right, the problem is in the cooktop.

"Induction cooktop shuts off on its own." Blocked cooling vents, a failed cooling fan or an overheating sensor can trigger protective shutdowns.

How Switch Handles Your Range

1. Start your repair request. Call or send the form — we answer 24/7. Gas, electric or induction, the brand and the symptom are all we need.

2. We diagnose the range. Spark and flame tests on gas burners, a look at the burner heads, caps and ports, resistance and voltage tests on electric elements and switches, and board, coil and fan checks on induction.

3. You get the facts. What failed and what the repair involves. You decide.

4. We repair, test and wrap up. Genuine or OEM-approved parts, then every burner or zone is lit or powered and checked before we leave. Repairs carry a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor.

If the oven on the same range also has a problem, mention it when you book — see our Oven Repair page for what we check there.

Pro-Style Ranges Have Their Own Quirks

Professional-style ranges are built heavy and last a long time, but they pack in more burners and features than a standard stove.

  • Dual-ring burners handle a hard sear and a low simmer. A clogged inner ring can leave a burner that works on high but dies on low.
  • Automatic re-ignition relights a burner that blows out. If the spark keeps snapping while the flame is lit, the electrode may be dirty or the module failing.
  • Griddles and grills have their own burners, igniters and thermostats, and they collect grease.
  • Two ovens on wide ranges mean two sets of igniters, sensors and fans.

We work on these ranges regularly and come prepared for their weight and layout.

The Parts Behind Most Range Repairs

Spark switches. Each gas knob has a small switch that tells the spark module to fire. Spills and steam get into them, which is why one wet switch can make every burner click.

Spark module. The module sends high voltage to the electrodes. When it weakens, the spark gets thin and burners light slowly or not at all.

Burner heads, caps and electrodes. Simple parts that crack, warp or get coated with grease over the years.

Infinite switches. On electric tops, these knobs cycle the element on and off to hold a setting. A stuck switch means a zone that is only off or only on high.

Elements and receptacles. Coil and radiant elements burn out; their receptacles and terminal blocks can scorch.

Induction boards and coils. The power board drives the coils, and a cooling fan protects them. These are the main repair parts on induction cooktops.

Quick Checks Before You Call

  • Make sure burner caps sit flat and centered on their heads.
  • Let a burner that got wet dry out completely, then try again.
  • Clean clogged ports gently with a straightened paper clip or a soft brush — not a toothpick, which can snap off inside.
  • Check the breaker or the plug.
  • For induction, test your pan with a magnet.

Repair or Replace?

Spark switches, modules, igniters, elements, infinite switches and burner parts are small parts next to a whole new range. Most stoves and cooktops are well worth repairing. Replacement may be the sharper move for a cracked glass top on an older, basic model or when the main control for an aging range is no longer available. You get the facts first.

Keep Every Burner Working

  • Clean spills once the cooktop cools, before they bake into the ports.
  • Dry burner parts completely after washing.
  • Use glass-top cleaners, not abrasive pads.
  • Pick heavy cookware up rather than dragging it over the glass.
  • Keep induction vents clear.
  • Match pan size to the burner or zone.

Quick answers before you book

Stove, Range & Cooktop Repair FAQ

Why does my burner click but not light?

Usually a misaligned cap, clogged ports or moisture. If cleaning and drying do not fix it, the electrode or the spark module may be weak.

How do I stop constant clicking?

Cut the power and let the range dry. If the clicking comes back, a spark switch or the spark module needs replacing.

Can a cracked glass top be replaced?

On many models, yes. We check part availability for your model first.

Do you fix induction cooktops?

Yes — power boards, coils, sensors, touch controls and cooling fans.

Do you repair Wolf, Viking and Thermador ranges?

Yes, along with everyday freestanding and slide-in ranges.

Is my range or cooktop repair covered by a warranty?

Every range or cooktop repair is covered for up to 6 months on parts and labor.
