What Changed With Your Ice?

"There is no ice." Possible causes: no water reaching the mold, a freezer running too warm for the ice maker to finish its cycle, a shutoff arm or sensor stuck on "full", or a failed ice maker module.

"The cubes are tiny or hollow." Possible causes: not enough water per fill. A clogged filter, a tired inlet valve or weak water pressure in the house.

"Water is leaking." Possible causes: an inlet valve that will not close completely, a cracked fill tube, a loose connection behind the fridge or an ice maker that is not level, so water spills before it freezes.

"The ice tastes bad." Possible causes: an old filter, ice that has sat in the bin for weeks and absorbed food odors, or a bin that needs a wash.

"The dispenser jams." Possible causes: cubes fused into a block, a failed auger motor, a stuck door flap or a bad dispenser switch.

"The fill tube is frozen." Possible causes: a valve that drips between fills or a freezer that runs too cold near the tube. The ice blocks new water from reaching the mold.

"My undercounter machine stopped making ice." Possible causes: a clogged water path from scale, a failed pump, a blocked drain or a problem in the machine's own cooling system.

How the Visit Goes

Start your repair request. Phone us or send the form — someone picks up 24/7. Tell us the brand and what the ice maker is doing.

We diagnose the system end to end. Freezer temperature first, then the water supply and pressure, the filter, the inlet valve, the fill tube, the mold and its heater, the module and its sensors, and the dispenser parts. On undercounter machines we also check the pump, the drain, the water path and the cooling system.

You hear what failed. We explain the cause and what the repair involves, and you decide.

We repair, test and wrap up. Genuine or OEM-approved parts, a test cycle and a look at the first harvest when the schedule allows. A warranty of up to 6 months covers parts and labor, up to 12 months on Sub-Zero.

Undercounter Ice Machines Are Their Own Category

Built-in undercounter ice makers are small, self-contained ice machines. Many make clear ice by running water over a chilled plate, then releasing the slab onto a cutter grid that slices it into cubes. Nugget-style machines use an auger to compress flakes into soft, chewable pieces. Both styles depend on:

  • Clean water paths. Hard water leaves scale that clogs distribution tubes and coats sensors.
  • A working pump and, on many models, a drain pump.
  • A drain that flows. If melt water cannot leave, the machine stops.
  • Their own compressor, condenser and fan. A dusty front grille makes them run hot.

Regular cleaning keeps these machines going for years. When something fails, most parts are replaceable.

Quick Checks You Can Do First

  • Flip the ice maker switch or arm to "on" and make sure it is not stuck in the "full" position.
  • Check the freezer temperature. It should be near 0°F.
  • Replace a filter that is past its date.
  • Make sure the water supply valve behind the refrigerator is open all the way.
  • Empty the bin if the ice is clumped and let the ice maker start fresh.
  • After a reset or a new filter, give it up to 24 hours to make the first batch.

Ice for Homes, Rentals and Offices

Ice makers fail in kitchens, basement bars, office break rooms and rental units alike. In a rental, let us know who will meet the technician; we report the cause clearly so the owner and the tenant are on the same page. In an office, we can often schedule around business hours so the break room is not torn up mid-day.

Repair or Replace?

Ice maker modules, inlet valves, fill tubes, sensors and dispenser motors are replaced on their own, without replacing the refrigerator. That is almost always worth it. For an older add-on kit on an aging refrigerator, or an undercounter machine with a failed sealed system, replacement may be the sharper move. You get the facts first.

What changed?

The Parts That Fail Most Often

Water inlet valve. An electric valve opens for a few seconds to fill the mold. A weak coil or a clogged screen means too little water; a valve that will not seal means drips, leaks and frozen tubes.

Ice maker module or assembly. The motor, the timing and the harvest heater live here. When the module fails, the mold fills and freezes but the cubes never drop.

Fill tube and fill-tube heater. Some refrigerators warm the tube slightly so it cannot freeze shut. If that heater fails, ice blocks the tube again and again.

Bin sensor or shutoff arm. It tells the ice maker when the bin is full. A stuck arm or a dirty optical sensor stops production while the bin is still empty.

Auger motor and dispenser flap. These move ice out through the door. A burned-out motor or a flap that will not open stops the dispenser even when the bin is full.

Quick answers before you book

Ice Maker Repair FAQ

Why did my ice maker stop working?

The most common causes are a freezer running too warm, a frozen fill tube, a failed inlet valve, a clogged filter or a failed ice maker module.

Why is there a sheet of ice in my freezer under the ice maker?

Water is spilling during the fill. The inlet valve may not be closing completely, the fill tube may be cracked, or the ice maker may not be level.

How long does a new ice maker take to make ice?

Up to 24 hours for the first batch, once the freezer is at temperature.

Do you repair nugget and clear-ice machines?

Yes. We repair built-in undercounter ice machines, including clear-ice and nugget-style models.

Can low water pressure stop an ice maker?

Yes. Most refrigerator inlet valves need roughly 20 psi or more. If the whole house has weak pressure, the ice maker is often the first to show it.

Is my ice maker repair covered by a warranty?

Ice maker repairs carry up to 6 months on parts and labor; Sub-Zero repairs carry up to 12 months.
